Royal

The famous Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen is the source of inspiration for Royal, a series of furniture textiles of 100 per cent pure new wool, available in 15 beautiful colours e.g. the characteristic blues and greens of Arne Jacobsen’s color scheme.

Foremost, Arne Jacobsen is known for his chairs, among others The Seven and The Ant. They are omnipresent in Denmark and worldwide they are among the 20th century’s most sold. Arne Jacobsen was not all that happy about being titled “designer”. To him the word had a ring of smartness and trifl es. He considered himself an architect, but his enthusiasm and his active mind went further as he threw himself into designing, everything from furniture, lamps, cutlery, fittings and loudspeakers to fabrics.

Arne Jacobsen had already gained international acknowledgement for his many innovative building projects, when in 1955 he was given the assignment of designing the SAS Royal Hotel in the center of Copenhagen. The recently formed Scandinavian airline wanted to create a unique building that would be a combination of a luxury hotel and an air port terminal. Arne Jacobsen was in charge of not only the outside lines but also of the layout and design of the 22 floors with a total of 275 rooms. Woolen tapestries, check-in counters, stairways, bed spreads, dressing tables, door handles, a series of drinking glasses, fabrics for the many different pieces of furniture and many other things in this big hotel were all designed by Arne Jacobsen. The assignment gave Arne Jacobsen the opportunity to use all of his great talent, which places him as one of the 20th century’s most complex and versatile architects. The building was finished in 1960 and the reputation of the SAS Royal Hotel made people come to the Danish capitol from all over the world to see it. For the hotel Arne Jacobsen had designed the chair classics The Egg and The Swan upholstered in wool textiles, the structure, quality and color of which have inspired Danish Art Weaving in creating the series of furniture fabrics that very appropriately were named Royal.

Royal, produced of 100 per cent pure new wool, has its roots in the classic, simple weaving. That combined with the density of the wool gives the furniture textiles a high degree of elasticity without the use of synthetics. This makes Royal especially well qualified for furniture with more challenging shapes such as Arne Jacobsen’s The Egg, The Swan and The Drop. Color-wise Royal is based on the plant colors.
